Staying the Course: Plotting a Novel

To plot a novel, use an emotional compassOne of the hardest things for me to do in writing my current novel isn't the writing. It's creating the plot, specifically, keeping the focus where it should be — in this case, on what the characters feel, what they want.

After three weeks of wondering why this is such a problem, I realize that part of the reason is my reporting and editing background. I'm so used to keeping to the facts for journalism and the how-to for editing that I lose my way when I leave those mindsets. One bit of advice that's helped:  "Keep, up front, how people are emotionally connected to each other.
